Hockey-Specific Training Program

Program Design

We have designed our Hockey Training Program with the intention of providing each player with the essential tools needed to prepare for competition.  Our Player Development Process helps to bridge the gap between off-ice training and on-ice performance.

Aerobic Conditioning

A player should seek to build their aerobic base in the off-season to prepare for the upcoming higher intensity phases of conditioning.  A strong aerobic base allows a player to skate longer and harder by delaying fatigue and allowing for a quicker recovery between play stoppages, and time on the bench.

Anaerobic Conditioning

Since hockey is a stop and start sport involving repetitive sprinting situations, players must be able to react and explode into action by exerting maximum force over short distances.  Either on or off-ice, we challenge the player’s anaerobic system at game level and above intensities so skating technique can be maintained during the most crucial game situations.

Strength Training

A greater level of strength plays a huge role in a player’s ability to optimally perform explosive movements while protecting the joints from injury.  Increases in strength assists such skating skills as accelerating, cornering, pivoting, stopping and starting, as well as shooting, puck control, and bodychecking.

SAQ Training

Players need to be physically challenged to improve their on-ice performance.  Our speed, agility, and quickness training mimics on-ice intensities and recovery periods.  This in turn increases the explosiveness and precision with which players can control their bodies--facilitating coordinated efforts between body position, footwork, stick position, and puck control, all the while reacting to the constant and rapid changes of the game.

Explosive Power Training

Through resistive and overspeed training, explosive strength training, or plyometrics, our power training is geared toward training total body movement patterns with maximal force output in a safe and effective manner.

Nutritional Counseling

What a player consumes before a game or practice plays a huge role in the outcome.  Energy levels, muscle recovery, and injury prevention are predicated on proper nutrition.  Our staff will take a closer look at proper intake recommendations for food and fluid during these important times.

Assessment/Evaluation

Our hockey-specific evaluation process is a combination of muscular and structural weakness/imbalance identification with off-ice performance ability.  The injury screening portion is a great tool to avoid injuries that plague players, and our performance tests help to measure the current athletic ability of the player.

Balance/Stabilization

Our first phase of training focuses on building the foundational tools needed to prepare for higher intensity strength and power training.  Without a solid foundation to build upon, a player will never reach their full potential and remain injury-free.
